Oh, it’s countdown to elections!!!
Anyone who knows me KNOWS I hate politics and the political BS Pre-show (which is the months leading up to voting time). If people start talking politics in a room, I quickly disappear. Some people actually get stupid during this time and shout out their views and opinions feeling they are CERTAIN they will change anyones mind. More often than not it just creates a different opinion from others.
The problem with talking politics is it rarely ends well. People get so passionate about their beliefs that they literally lose themselves.
Because of my serious feelings Sunday night dinners have been rather quiet. But apparently with the elections getting so close, Chris decided to throw his two cents into the ring. As I sat there watching mom and Chris go back and forth, I am watching Julie in the middle twitching; because she is keeping her mouth shut knowing I have an exit strategy if this ‘thing’ goes full out! She is literally squirming in her chair, because between the three of them, SHE is probably the most researched and versed on all the voting aspects and has the most reason to chime in. But she didn’t want me to leave so she kept her mouth closed. It was actually painful to watch her at one point, because she gets just as (‘scuse the term) ‘stupid’ as the rest of them when it comes to screaming out her point of view.
Finally I gave her permission to ‘go for it’ and off they went. I grabbed my iphone and started surfing the net. Who needs the political debates on TV when I have these people in my life. Oy Vey……
Again; it’s not that I don’t have opinions. But they are MY opinions and I’m not going to change the way anyone feels.
In the end, we did start talking about some of the measures and I DID give a few of my opinions, but I know when to call it quits. And I don’t leave the table feeling exhausted. More or less I’m exhaustipated; which is too tired to give a crap.
Julie threw in her 42 cents and then we retreated to doing dishes. Mom and Chris were still going at it. One thing mom loves is to defend her views and one thing Chris loves to do is push moms buttons.
Julie and I stood at the sink as they bantered back and forth and we were actually laughing, because it was hysterical to listen to them go at each other like a mom and dad in a knock down drag out fight!
If I could take their blood pressure afterwards, I’m sure Chris’ is on the low side because he is actually enjoying it and mom’s was probably through the roof. Thank God she takes medication for it. Strokes run on her side of the family, and Chris was pushing her to the edge.
One time Chris’ mom was over while my mom was going off. Chris’ mom sat at the table listening to my mom drop “F” bombs over political issues and her eyes got big as saucers. I looked at her and smiled and said, “Oh, is this your first time?”
Don’t mess with my mom and politics.
It’s actually funny, because she asked me one day why I “bury my head in the sand”. I told her I don’t bury anything. But I do believe all politicians are “Well intentioned and Poorly executed” and that is that. There are too many hands in the pot in the government and nothing ever gets done the way that it was supposed to. THOSE are my political views.
My ballot is filled out and I will drop it tomorrow and consider my job done. After that, I wait for the answers and in the end, I will likely feel that my vote had little impact. But I did my civil duty and I will move on and take care of my kids and do what they government tells me to do, which will never coincide with what I really want to do.
Don’t forget to vote. But don’t feel the need to talk about it.
Happy Monday
