I am NOT a fan of automation… I went into Michaels to get some stuff and when I went to the front and saw a bunch of computers… I asked the lady, “Are we checking ourselves out now?” She said, “Unless you are paying cash”….. This didn’t sit well with me. I like having an actual interaction with someone when checking out….AND….I NEVER have a smooth transaction when self checking out so I never opt for it…
As I was sitting there muttering under my breath that I don’t work here, but here I am working…I watched a young mom come up with a 3ish year old in her arms and she had to put the kid down so she could check herself out… the kid immediately threw a fit because he didn’t want to be put down, but she was just trying to get it done quickly; I could see the frazzled look on her face as her kid is crying and then settles in to walking around the area picking at the stuff in the shelves… Thankfully, she only had a few items, but her experience triggered me because if she had someone helping her, it would have been a nicer experience for her in the store.
I called the store and asked what happened to the cashiers and the manager said there is someone up there to check out and told him I was directed to the machine to help myself. I told him if that is the way it is going to be, I will either shop Amazon online, OR go to Hobby Lobby, because that doesn’t’ set well with me. He was defensive and I told him to keep defending himself as the storefronts go away because they will lose more people as time goes on…
I mean, you can call me Karen if you want, but this poor mom made my heart hurt. So bye bye Michaels….
