Okay, so we Californians are a bit….um….let’s just say it; WHINEY!!!
Yes it’s cold outside. I got up this morning and it was 58 in my house!! I have layers I can put on, as well as the heater; but I decided this morning to post it on Facebook. And when I did, I started chuckling at myself, because for the last few days I have seen SO MANY “Cold” posts, I rolled my eyes.
I have lived in Massachusetts. You want COLD??? When I first moved there, I will never forget what my dad handed me. It was a foreign object that looked like a squeegee on one side and a brush on the other. Only there was no rubber on the squeegee side. I asked, ‘What is it?” He said, “An ICE Scraper…..”
The look on my face was pretty clear. I had never seen one before to know where the ice would be that would need scraping. He said, “Keep it in your car, you will need it!” WHHHHAAAAAAA?????????
Lo and Behold, when winter came I quickly realized what it was. Thankfully I didn’t have to use it too much, but I did have to use it.
That was also the year I learned about Snow Angels.
My parents grew up in Pennsylvania. Snow was not new to them. I remember the day we were exploring Massachusetts on a snowy day and we headed up to the Grist Mill. It was a beautiful old place where they milled corn and such. We were on the grounds and I was standing next to my mom. I was looking up at the building when out of the corner of my eye I saw my mom fall to the ground. I was instantly alarmed. I looked down and said, “Are you okay??” She had the biggest smile on her face and was waving her feet and hands back and forth saying, “Weeeeeeee!!!” I said, “OMG…what are you doing??” She said, “Making a Snow Angel!” I said, “What the hell’s a SNOW Angel???” Then she got up an showed me.
I gotta be honest, I didn’t totally see it at first, because I was still in shock at my mother. But within minutes we were throwing snowballs (which packing them, I admit is a skill).
It may be cold here, but at least our roads aren’t compromised. When I was learning to drive in the snow, my little brother took me to an empty parking lot. He told me to drive slowly and if I started spinning to turn INTO the direction I was spinning. I thought, Ummm….Okay, I’m only going about 20 miles per hour but whatever. And then it happened. I started spinning and he started yelling at me to turn into the spin! I didn’t realize it but the little bugger pulled the emergency brake to get us spinning. Thankfully no one was around. And it only took him a few minutes to stop laughing.
REAL cold weather is a force to be reckoned with. I honestly have been thinking about the poor homeless people out in the cold with no where to go as I sit in my house complaining it’s a whopping 58 degrees. How cold might it be in the brush out in the open? How cold is it in a cardboard box?
I’m not kidding. I have seriously been thinking about it.
But I have jackets and a roof and lots of blankets to keep me warm. Yes it’s cold outside, but for the most part, I’m not out there, so I have nothing really to complain about and a lot to be thankful for.
So though my hands are cold, I will try not to complain too much. I will just bundle up with another layer and fix myself a hot cup of tea to warm my hands.
And in all honesty; I will pray for the homeless.
Happy Monday
